Peter Tessier: Goaltending: It's a helluva drug!
Jets beat Oilers 5-2 for first win of season as Hellebuyck has stand out performance. - Peter.Tessier
Loved watching TSN's Oilers guy Rishaug get all pissy about Hellebuyck blowing them off.
Especially loved Nick Mercadante calling Rishaug out on it. |

Goaltending is the key or "a" key. Goaltending is a big thing for me, but who cares what I think? But seriously, was last nites game a bit of a reverse carbon copy of the Jets first game in terms of goaltending? Well maybe not quite exactly but "Their" goalie comes in, gets peppered in the first period, manages to stop everything, gets in the game and the rest is history. But I know its not that simple but good for Helle to feel the puck early on, made the "first" save and continued on confidently.
Good game for the goalie, forwards and D. BTW, how about the D? I am a Poolman fan and I said early on the guy should be playing regular and last nite was another example that he does not look out of place one iota. Last nites D looked m,uch better than game 1 and 2. The coach needs to keep this guy in the lineup and wait and see if he has a bad game. Hasn't yet so he needs to stay in. No, I am not Poolmans long lost brother or friend, I just recognize a capable D man.
I luv Buf but what are we going do with him? Put him back up front on a regular shift and anchor man on D on the power play? I am sorry to say this but the D is better without Buf. That hurts to say it and I have been biting my tongue out sheer affection for our fan favourite Buff, but lets face the truth. Even Cassie Campbell said it hurts to say it. Buf up front for a regular shift and anchor the D on the PP, Poolman on the back side, ride the hot goalie and lets go! |

This team always plays better when Buff or Toby are out. Poolman looks absolutely solid! Trading Buff would be ideal. He cannot play forward in this league anymore, he was terrible when both Noel and Maurice had him up front. |

Buff was terrible up front because he did not want to play on the wing. Too much skating for him !
In watching the game last night, I did not notice any of our d-men getting caught as far out of position as Buff usually is, when a goal is scored on us. Not saying that the positioning was perfect, but much better than when #33 is out there. |

The defence is not better with Byfuglien out. We allowed 39 shots on goal. That's really bad. Byfuglien at forward is even worse. A line of Matthias-Lowry-Byfuglien would get destroyed on a nightly basis, while also tanking Byfuglien's production (and trade value). Our defence would work best as: 44-8, 39-3, 57-33. That 3rd pairing is a huge defensive question mark, but the top 4 would lock it down enough that Buff and the giraffe can eat powerplay time and 4th lines alive. |

I was never serious in suggestion Buff as a forward. Hence the lol. He is a valuable member of this team and his positives add up to more than his negatives. Jets have to make a decision on Chariot and what they can get for him in a trade or otherwise give him up on waivers. His goose is cooked.

Buff was bad as a forward but his absolutely best stretch of games as a defenseman came right after being moved back to D from the wing.
Maybe Buff just needs a reminder once in a while that if he is not going to concentrate on D the coach is willing to punish him by moving him up front, even if its just for a few games.
I for one would like to see Laine -Little-Buff, for a game or two.

Chariot would bring nothing more than a 7th rounder, not worth moving D depth for that. There will absolutely be injuries to this D and we NEED EXTRAS!! moving one should not be an option because outside of Poolmen and Chariot there is nothing. Niku, Kostelak and anyone else are not ready. |

I 100% agree that its nice to keep the depth at D. However the minute Hendricks is ready it will mean that the roster needs to be reduced. The obvious choice right now is Dano since Tanev has displayed more grit and better skill set . The Armia injury though might also buy them some time depending on the severity.
Out of Petan, Dano, Tanev, Hendricks, Poolman, Chariot , and Copp only five get to stay once everyone is healthy. I would bet that its Poolman, Tanev, Copp , Petan and Hendricks. If Chariot has to stay for added depth at D , then one of those five has to go.

Ross. I think there are a couple of teams that could use Chariot in a third defensive pairing. Vegas in particular comes to mind. Maybe Detroit or some others as well. I also think Petan would be a good pickup for Vegas. He is a luxury we won't need too much longer with Roslovic and Spacek in the pipeline and nearly ready for primetime. The package of the two of them ( Chariot and Petan) might be worth a second and fifth round pick or a top notch 3rd or 4th liner. It may not happen right away but at some point as the season carries on it may happen. Jets have too many good prospects and little to no spots for them on the Jets. |

Vegas needs to get rid of 3 bottom pairing defensemen not add another one. I do agree that at some point this season the meddling bottom six will need to be thinned out. If Dano Petan Copp Armia Tanev (did I miss any yewts?) can't find NHL level consistency then they need to be moved out near the deadline for some veteran pieces that can do the job. |
